Jazz singer and songwriter Billie Holiday died on July 17, 1959. In May of 1959, Holiday was diagnosed with liver and heart disease. Holiday’s death was due to cirrhosis of the liver. At the time of her death she was under arrest for possession of narcotics. Below is a video of Billie Holiday performing one of her nostalgic songs, “Strange Fruit.”
