Today in Black History: August 6, 1965 “The Voting Rights Act of 1965 Was Signed”

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The act put an end to literacy test and poll taxes. The law made it illegal to put restrictions on state, local, and federal elections. President Lyndon Johnson also announced that lawsuits will be filed against any state that was still requiring poll tax.
