Today in Black History: April 4, 1968 “The Death of Dr. Martin Luther King”


On today in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at The Lorraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee. He was standing on the balcony as he was shot. The bullet entered through his right cheek, traveled down his spinal cord, and lodged in his shoulder. After chest surgery, Dr. King was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital at approximately 7:05 p.m. He was 39 years old at the time of his death. The motel is now the National Civil Rights Museum.
