On today in 1959, A Raisin in the Sun debuted at the Ethel Barrymore Theater. An African American woman, Lorraine Hansberry, produced the Broadway play. The play stared Sidney Poiter and Claudia McNeil. In 1961, the play was adapted into a film and received an award at the Cannes Film Festival.
