Today in Black History: February 12, 1909 “The NAACP was Founded”

On today in 1909, the National Association for The Advancement of Color People (NAACP) was founded. 60 black and white citizens formed the organization. The goal of the NAACP was to fight for civil rights and their mission is “to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.” Every year the NAACP holds an Image Award show for achievement in the arts and entertainment, and they hold a Spingarn Medal ceremony for outstanding positive achievement of any kind. The NAACP headquarters is located in Baltimore, Maryland.
