Today in Black History: February 3, 1956 “Autherine Lucy Became the First African American Student to Attend the University of Alabama”

On today in 1956, Autherine Lucy became the first African American student to attend the University of Alabama. She originally applied to attend the university in 1952, but she was denied admittance because of the color of her skin. After a three-year court battle, she enrolled as a graduate student in library science. On Lucy’s third day of class, a mob assembled to stop her from entering the class. Lucy was expelled by the university because they claimed they couldn’t protect her.
