Today in Black History: December 22, 1960 ” The Birth of Jean- Michel Basquiat”

On today in 1960, Jean- Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York. He was an American artist. In the late 1970’s, Basquiat began his career creating graffiti art in the lower eastside off Manhattan, New York. In the 1980’s, his Neo- expressionist and Primitivist paitings were exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. Basquiat died in 1988 at the age of 27, due to drug abuse. The Whitney Museum of American Art hosted a retrospective of Basquiat in 1992. One of his paintings was auctioned off in 2013 for $48.8 million.
