Today in Black History: December 21, 1976 “Patricia Roberts Harris Becomes Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development”

On today in 1976, President Jimmy Carter named Patricia Roberts Harris Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. She became the first African American woman appointed to a presidential cabinet position. Prior to this position Harris was an educator and U.S. diplomat.
