Today in Black History: December 20, 1981 “DREAMGIRLS Opened on Broadway”

On today in 1981, the musical Dreamgirls opened on Broadway. The play was based on show business and acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and others. Henry Kriegar created the music and Tom Eyen created the lyrics and books. Michael Bennett directed the production and it stared Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jennifer Holiday, Loretta Devine, Ben Harney, Cleavant Derricks, and Obba Babatunde. Dreamgirls was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won six.  The play was turned into a movie in 2006.
