Today in Black History: December 16, 2000 “Colin Powell was Appointed as the First African American Secretary of State”

On today in 2000, Colin Powell was appointed as the first African American Secretary of State. President George W. Bush nominated him for the position. Powell became the highest ranked African American in the Unites States government. He held the position until 2004 and Condoleezza Rice took over the position after President Bush’s reelection.
