On today in 1997, Lee Patrick Brown was elected the first African American Mayor of Houston, Texas. Brown had a long career in law enforcement prior to becoming Mayor. He also worked under the Bill Clinton administration as the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Brown was reelected for Mayor in 1998 and 2004. During Brown’s time as mayor, he invested in the city’s infrastructure. The city started its first light-rail system, increased bus services, park and rides, opened three new sport arenas, revitalized the downtown area, and constructed the city’s first convention center hotel.
