Today in Black History: November 10, 1960 “Andrew Hatcher Became the Associate Press Secretary to President John F. Kennedy”

On today in 1960, Andrew Hatcher became the associate press secretary to President John F. Kennedy. This made Hatcher the first African American to serve in the White House press office. Prior to the secretary position, Hatcher worked as a speechwriter for John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign. His job as press secretary consisted of briefing the media on President Kennedy’s policies and decisions. Andrew Hatcher also conducted news conferences and press briefings.
