On September 29, 1975, WGPR-TV Detroit, became the first black-owned station to broadcast in the United States! WGPR-TV Detroit, was founded by Doctor William Banks, Brother George White and Jim Panagos. The main goal for WGPR-TV Detroit, was “to provide a public, open communication source to the black community in Detroit.” The call letters WGPR-TV stood for “Where God’s Presence Raidates.”
