Today in Black History: August 30, 1983 “First African American in Space”

Dr. Guion Stewart “Guy” Bluford, Jr. was an engineer and NASA astronaut. On August 30, 1983, Bluford became the first African American to go into space.  He participated in the Space Shuttle Challenger on mission STS-8. Bluford was a part of four Space Shuttle flights between 1983 and 1992. Prior to becoming an astronaut, Bluford was a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force.
