Today in Black History: August 22, 1866 “Fisk University was Founded”

Fisk University was founded on August 22, 1867. This was the first African American college founded in Tennessee. The University was named in honor of General Clinton B. Fisk, who was the leader of the Tennessee Freedmen’s Bureau. W.E.B. Du Bois and Ida B. Wells are both alumni of Fisk University.
