Today in Black History: August 15, 1887 “The City of Eatonville Was Founded”


The City of Eatonville, Florida was formed on August 15, 1887. This one of the first all-black towns formed after the Emancipation Proclamation was incorporated. Twenty-seven registered voters, all black men, met in a building they decided to call Town Hall and voted to incorporate the city of Eatonville. Eatonville is famous for being the birthplace of writer Zora Neale Hurston.
