Today in Black History: August 14, 1876 “Prairie View State University Founded”

Prairie View State University was founded on August 14, 1876. The college was established during the “Reconstructive Period” after the CIvil War. Prairie View State University was the first state supported college in Texas for African Americans. There were separate articles pledged to establish separate schools for whites and colored children. There was the “Alta Vista Agricultural” and “Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth”.
