Today in Black History: August 13, 1892 “Baltimore Afro-American Newspaper Founded”

The Afro-American
On August 13, 1892, John Henry Murphy Sr., founded the Baltimore Afro-American Newspaper. Murphy was a former slave who after the Emancipation Proclamation started the newspaper after his church publication, The Sunday School Helper merged with two other publications. After Murphy’s death in 1922, his sons took over the Afro-American newspaper.
