Today in Black History: August 10, 1989 “Colin Powell Named Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff”

Colin L. Powell was named Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on August 10, 1989. This is the highest military position in the United States of America. Powell was appointed to the position by President George H.W. Bush and was the first African American to hold this position.
