Today in Black History: July 18, 1964


On July 18, 1964 race riots broke out in Harlem and spread out in to the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York. The riots started in Harlem, New York after the shooting of fifteen year-old James Powell. Powell was shot by an white off-duty police officer. The riots went on for six days and resulted in one death, over one hundred injuries, and over 450 arrest.
