On July 8, 2001, Venus Williams won the Wimbledon Women’s Singles championship for the second time in a row. Venus defeated Justine Henin. Williams was the first African American to win Wimbledon, since Althea Gibson won in 1958. She was also the first women to win consecutive Wimbledon Championship since 1995-1996.
