Tuskegee Institute
Today, in 1881, Booker T. Washington opened Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. Washington was in shock when he arrived to Tuskegee. Washington revealed that, “before going to Tuskegee, I had expected to find there a building and all the necessary apparatus ready for me to begin teaching. I found nothing of the kind. I did find, though, hundreds of hungry, earnest souls who wanted to secure knowledge.”The roof was so leaky a student had hold an umbrella over him as Washington taught the class.
